Patrick Jackson used to be a New York city lawyer.
He enjoyed Latin America and all of the richness the language and culture has to offer. In 1997, he first embarked on the journey to learn Spanish.
He devoured every course he could find at the time, then tried his new learning out and about in New York city. But when he tried to talk with Spanish speakers of Latin American descent, he found that they couldn’t understand him, and they insisted on talking back to him in English.
The clincher came when he was waiting to buy a movie ticket and an attractive Latin American woman stood behind him, speaking with her friend. When Patrick tried a couple of lines, they broke into hysterical laughter and he heard the word gringo over and over again. He was so embarrassed he vowed to himself to learn Latin American Spanish as soon as he could find a way to learn it correctly.

He called a friend that evening and told him what had happened at the movie theater. The friend told Patrick that the classical Spanish he had learned was nothing like modern Latin American Spanish, but more some form of archaic, outdated Spanish.

Most of the courses sold, even today, will have you speaking Spanish that almost literally, sounds out of this world to any native speakers, never mind Latin American Spanish speakers. Patrick was (and is) determined to rectify this situation. He decided to scrutinize all of the Spanish courses he had taught himself with, taking them apart one by one until he constructed a version that could teach people real life Latin American Spanish.

He contacted several Latin American friends and begged them to supply some of the language he would use for this new course. Patrick wanted only the real deal. The language his friends used every day. Yet while conversational, he insisted on language that college educated Latin American people would also be comfortable with.
He developed Learning Spanish Like Crazy for people who needed a practical and quick learning method, yet wanted more than just basic Spanish. He didn’t want people to be turned off while trying to learn Latin American Spanish.
As time has gone on Learning Spanish Like Crazy has developed into a sequence of programs, all with the same down to earth style. Patrick is a perfectionist who strongly believes that you need to immerse yourself in the language to learn it well. Hence more and more additions to the Learn Spanish Like Crazy stable, culminating in the production of the Verbarrator, an essential tool for mastering Spanish verb conjugations.

Patrick doesn’t want the embarrassing moments that occurred to him, to happen to others. He wants people to be able to communicate with each other in a natural and conversational way. He wants to help people experience the joy of learning another language properly, learning all the nuances and intonations and subtleties, then putting that knowledge to use. Bringing people together and into understanding with each other was part of his goal. Another part was to have fun in reaching out into another culture and people. Latin American Spanish is a diverse and rich language. Millions of people all over the world use it everyday.
Patrick is trying to bring all of us closer together. A lot of us believe he is succeeding with his language learning program. I hope this Patrick Jackson review will encourage more people to give learning Spanish a try.
